The history of the gay and lesbian community<\/b> of these two splendid cities blends inextricably with the first civil rights movements<\/b> and the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community<\/b> in Italy.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”viola”][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this new, unprecedented, LGBTQ+ themed tour<\/b> we will take you to discover the immense artistic heritage<\/b> of these two cities, analyzing the historical causes that have transformed Pisa and Lucca into strongholds<\/b> of the Italian gay and lesbian community<\/b> from the past to the present! Starting from Lucca<\/b>, the only city after Florence to set up a special court for “sodomitic crimes<\/b>“, called the \u201cUffizio sopra l\u2019Onest\u00e0”. In a city that had just 20,000 inhabitants, the list of names that appear in the registers leads us to believe that Lucca was full of erotic tensions<\/b>, which flared up in the many silk factories – all frequented by men – present in the city (Lucca boasts a centenary tradition of silk manufacturing<\/b>!). We will take you through the picturesque streets<\/b> of Lucca, in the shadow of Romanesque basilicas<\/b> and stately buildings, telling you the untold queer stories<\/b> of this animated and mysterious city![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We will then move on to discover Pisa<\/b>, the city that hosted the first Italian Gay Pride<\/b> in 1979. After the Stonewall riots and following some homophobic attacks in Viareggio, the Orfeo Collective of Pisa<\/b> decided to organize a peaceful parade through the streets of the city that ended with a joyful roundabout right in Piazza dei Miracoli<\/b>, by the iconic Leaning Tower<\/b>. This area was once a popular gay cruising spot<\/b>![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”viola”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Through the streets of the ancient maritime republic, we will lead you to discover Piazza de’ Cavalieri<\/b>, home to the most important university in Italy, the Scuola Superiore Normale<\/b>. The\u00a0 princely palace on the square belonged to the glorious Medici family<\/b>, who turned it into the meeting place of the Accademia del Cimento<\/b> (the ramshackle scientific academy made up of eccentric queer scientists<\/b> who competed to get into the good graces of the Grand Duke!). We will conclude our thematic itinerary in front of the only Italian mural by Keith Haring<\/b>, the well-known New York homosexual artist<\/b> who died in 1990.
