His passion for music, art and letters gave him a reputation as the \u201c<\/span><b>humanist pope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d who initiated <\/span><b>monumental projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like the new <\/span><b>St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Vatican Rooms&#8217; painting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decoration, and supported writers and artists like <\/span><b>Michelangelo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Raphael<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, according to contemporary sources, he was also <\/span><b>immoral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perverted and <\/span><b>totally gay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Francesco Guicciardini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in his History of Italy, writes:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early days of his pontificate, he was believed to be very chaste, but it was later discovered that he indulged excessively and without shame in those pleasures which I honestly cannot name. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Guicciardini, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of Italy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Volume 16, Chapter 12, ll. 29-32.)<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;57500&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guicciardini wasn\u2019t the only one to hint at Leo\u2019s <\/span><b>homosexual orientation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Paolo Giovio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another historian, wrote the Leo loved to entertain his valets and servants in \u201c<\/span><b>lascivious ways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and legend has it that when he came back to Florence in 1515, after the Medici family was exiled, Leo X had <\/span><b>young naked boys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dance around the streets <\/span><b>coated in gold paint<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to symbolize the \u201creturn of the Medici Golden Age\u201d (unfortunately, the poor guys died of lead poisoning). <\/span><b>Giovanni dall\u2019Orto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in his extensive review of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italy\u2019s gay historical figures (link: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giovannidallorto.com\/biografieindex.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saggi di storia gay e lesbica di Giovanni Dall&#8217;Orto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mentions the <\/span><b>Pasquinades<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (anonymous lampoons posted on public spaces in Rome) which described the pope\u2019s <\/span><b>inappropriate behavior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of them is particularly funny:<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Rome, when Leo married you [when he became pope], only bardasse [passive sodomites] and buffoons were held in high regard. (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See quote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Link: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giovannidallorto.com\/biografie\/leoneX\/leoneX.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/www.giovannidallorto.com\/biografie\/leoneX\/leoneX.html<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;57494&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raphael\u2019s famous portrait of Pope Leo X, kept at the Pitti Palace in Florence, shows us a <\/span><b>full-figured man<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (his favorite dish was <\/span><b>peacock sausages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrapped in gold leaf) sitting at his desk, with a <\/span><b>precious illuminated manuscript <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open before him. He\u2019s clearly been studying it, because he\u2019s holding a <\/span><b>magnifying glass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his hand, but he must have been distracted by something (or somebody) outside the picture as he\u2019s looking away from it. Behind him, his two associates and <\/span><b>close friends<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cardinal Luigi de\u2019 Rossi and his cousin Giulio de\u2019 Medici, while in the background we can perceive some <\/span><b>classical buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The finely <\/span><b>chiseled bell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> next to the book is another symbol of Leo&#8217;s sophisticated taste: his enemies accused him of making the Vatican <\/span><b>go bankrupt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of his <\/span><b>proverbial luxury<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;57498&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now perfectly restored to his former <\/span><b>glorious state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this painting is more than just a portrait, it\u2019s a perfectly clear <\/span><b>biography<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an <\/span><b>aesthete<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that valued <\/span><b>art and beauty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> above anything else. If he had been living in our times, Leo would certainly be called a <\/span><b>fashion icon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or maybe a <\/span><b>fashion queen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) who thought that <\/span><b>uniqueness and fabulousness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were more important than anything in this world. The fact that his enemies tried to destroy him, accuse him of <\/span><b>nepotism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>simony<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>sodomy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and so on (all of these accusations were probably true, by the way) only made him laugh and exclaim, \u201c<\/span><b>God has given us the papacy.
