One of the aspects that best describe his character was his particular proclivity for choosing <\/span><b>street boys and prostitutes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as painting models. In a period when artists were supposed to look for inspiration in classical works, Caravaggio would point at the <\/span><b>Roman crowd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and say, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I already got my models<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Needless to say, this <\/span><b>angered the bigots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who found this practice shocking and <\/span><b>totally inappropriate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given that the vast majority of his patrons were <\/span><b>members of the Roman clergy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidently, Caravaggio<\/span><b> never really cared much about judgment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Actually, it looks like he enjoyed being at the center of attention. When he moved to Rome from <\/span><b>Lombardy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he became famous for his unorthodox <\/span><b>naturalistic style<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which must have piqued the interest of the urban <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Inspired by the Roman <\/span><b>urban jungle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Caravaggio combined the <\/span><b>hustle and bustle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the 17th century city with <\/span><b>classical subjects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only to <\/span><b>disrupt the traditional way of painting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pave the way to a modern art which would appeal to the <\/span><b>senses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than the mind.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his <\/span><b>early works<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commissioned by rich aristocrats, bankers and<\/span><b> princes of the Church<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Caravaggio often exploits the theme of a <\/span><b>young adulthood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to satisfy his patrons (who were probably gay themselves), and give them an <\/span><b>erotically charged subject<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Young seductive boys with their mouths <\/span><b>half-open<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their skin <\/span><b>soft and white<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a pearl, partially <\/span><b>undressed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>lure the viewers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: these are Caravaggio beautiful ideal models, some of whom were his lovers, like <\/span><b>Mario Minniti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Cecco Bonneri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As he knew only too well, sex always sells and in Rome, the capital of Baroque <\/span><b>sexual decadence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it <\/span><b>sold even more<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he painted <\/span><b><i>Bacchus<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (circa 1596), Caravaggio was living under the protection of <\/span><b>Cardinal Del Monte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an eccentric character originally from <\/span><b>Tuscany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a close friend of <\/span><b>Grand Duke Ferdinando de\u2019 Medici<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Del Monte was so <\/span><b>influential<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Caravaggio endlessly <\/span><b>bragged about<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his patronage and felt he could <\/span><b>carry a sword<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just because he was his friend, even though he had no legal right (walking around the streets with a weapon was the prerogative of aristocracy). The cardinal was passionate about art, science (<\/span><b>Galileo Galilei <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famously gave him one of his telescopes) and <\/span><b>music plays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Concerts at his palace attracted many members of the <\/span><b>Roman upper class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; all <\/span><b>men<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of course &#8211; and sometimes a fair degree of <\/span><b>transvestism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was part of the entertainment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not hard to imagine Caravag<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gio trying to <\/span><b>please his crowd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ambiguous pagan subjects. His choice of <\/span><b>Bacchus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be traced back to Greco-roman god\u2019s popularity in the <\/span><b>Renaissance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly with artists like <\/span><b>Michelangelo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who had sculpted a <\/span><b><i>Drunken Bacchus<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Cardinal Raffaele Riario in 1496 (unfortunately, the cardinal found Michelangel\u2019s work a little too <\/span><b>adventurous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gave it to the Roman banker <\/span><b>Jacopo Galli)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, what strikes us in Caravaggio\u2019s Bacchus is a <\/span><b>realistic depiction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the god of <\/span><b>wine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>wilderness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, less idealized than any other before.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;vc_default&#8221; Caravaggio approached the subject <\/span><b>differently<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having Bacchus sitting on a <\/span><b>couch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in a <\/span><b>private environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that looks like the artist\u2019s studio,<\/span><b> about to take off his robe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which seems to be <\/span><b>thrown carelessly <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on him. He is offering a <\/span><b>glass of wine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the viewer and, from his <\/span><b>rosy cheeks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it looks like <\/span><b>he\u2019s been drinking <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>sexual innuendo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may refer to the <\/span><b>homosocial context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the cardinal\u2019s entourage, but the fact that Caravaggio <\/span><b>deprives the figure of his mentoring nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> turning him into a <\/span><b>young prostitute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>dirty fingernails<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and probably a <\/span><b>dirty mind too<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is even more interesting. Caravaggio deliberately <\/span><b>disrupts the traditional iconography of Bacchus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gives us a <\/span><b>modernized version<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the myth, an intentionally <\/span><b>queer figure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who might be about to say, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look, I\u2019m no Roman god, I\u2019m only dressed up as one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t forget the symbolic layer!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Caravaggio shows us a <\/span><b>fruit basket<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the fruit is slowly rotting away. If still lives were often included in secular subjects as tokens of the <\/span><b>precarious nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>earthly things<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the rotten fruit here could only mean that time goes by very fast.
